Alumni Spotlight: Joe Schneider

“I wanted to own a place that I would want to go to as a customer.”

That was Joe Schneider’s thought when he started Joe Black’s in 2003. His bar in downtown Grand Forks caters primarily to the college crowd. Since then the Fargo South graduate has added The Hub Pub as a business in 2016 that provides food and drink to its own specific clientele. “Each place has its own personality”.

After graduation, Joe spent some time in Denver, Colorado prior to return-enjoyed success but is always looking to innovate. “In this business, you can’t sit back on what you’ve been doing. People’s interests change and you must adapt. For example, if you would have asked me 25 years ago, I would have said Whitey’s would last forever.”

Joe remembers many of his Delta Upsilon brothers, many of whom remain close friends, today. He also is thankful to his big brother, Jeff Burke, ’93 for the support he gave him as an undergraduate.

Joe invites any DU brothers (of legal age) to stop into Joe Black’s or The Hub Pub when you are in Grand Forks.

He is a 1997 UND graduate with a degree in History. He resides in Grand Forks with his wife and two children.
