Late in the fall of 1834, twenty men from the sophomore and junior classes found ten of the best menfrom the freshmen class and came together in opposition to the activities of the two secret societies on theWilliams campus. The original name of Delta Upsilon was The Social Fraternity; this idea of “social”was of interest in one’s life and society. In 1847 all groups which were a part of The Social Fraternitywould meet in convention and decide to create a fraternity, this would be known as the Anti-SecretConfederation. With the new fraternity committed to the idea of non-secrecy they would adopt the mottoOuden Adelon, meaning “Nothing Secret.” This would stay around until 1858 when it was changed toDikaia Upotheke, meaning Justice, our foundation. The motto Dikaia Upotheke would also become thefirst of four founding principles. The four principles include the Advancement of Justice, the Promotionof Friendship, the Diffusion of Liberal Culture, and the Development of Character.
